Embracing the practice of simplifying your wardrobe is not only an essential component of defining your personal style, but it also sets the foundation for you to be intentional in other areas of your life. Just with any other minimalist approach, it’s about removing the excess to make room for what’s truly valuable to us. It’s not just about the numbers, although the numbers can come naturally with simplifying. Often our wardrobes can be a significant source of stress in our lives, so here’s my rhyme and reason for why we should simplify our wardrobes.
SAY GOODBYE TO THE PANIC OF NOT KNOWING WHAT TO WEAR
We all know what it feels like to wake up in the morning and drag yourself over to the overflowing closet, only to hear that oh so familiar voice in your head: I have nothing to wear. When you simplify your wardrobe, the items you love will begin to show themselves, undistracted by the items that don’t bring us any value or joy.
SAY HELLO TO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE
When you cull your wardrobe down to only the pieces you love and wear regularly, you start to develop a distinct personal style. Defining it further and building a wardrobe around pieces that fit in with your style will help you ignore anything that doesn’t. Added bonus: growing a personalized sense of style = more confidence.
FOCUS ON THE MORE IMPORTANT STUFF
When you don’t have to spend hours getting ready and figuring out what to wear, you have more time, energy and room in your mind to focus on what needs to be done. Less stressing over your wardrobe = increased productivity. Let that creativity flow.
QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
When you’re curating a wardrobe filled with fewer items, chances are the items you decide to keep are going to be higher quality than the ones you discard. By adopting a minimalist approach to clothing, you will inevitably be consuming less and begin to make more conscious decisions about what you’re purchasing. As Vivienne Westwood said, “Buy less. Choose well. Make it last.”
LESS SHOPPING, LESS SPENDING
Don’t worry, that’s just the sweet sound of your credit card not swiping a machine to death. When you focus on consuming less, your money will no longer burn a hole in your pocket. It’s laying a “home sweet home” doormat right smack in front of your bank account.
